Transmission Fluid Change: When Do I Need to Change It?

If you're like most drivers, you probably don't think about your transmission fluid until there's a problem. And that's completely understandable—after all, it's not exactly something that's easy to check on a regular basis. But just because it's out of sight doesn't mean it can be ignored. In fact, if you don't change your transmission fluid when it needs to be changed, you could end up with some expensive repairs down the road. So when is the right time for a transmission fluid change?

The answer, unfortunately, isn't a simple one. The frequency with which you need to change your transmission fluid will depend on a number of factors, including the type of vehicle you drive and the conditions in which you drive it. That said, there are some general guidelines that can help you determine when it's time for a change.

If you drive a manual transmission, it's generally recommended that you change your fluid every 30,000 miles or so. If you have an automatic transmission, the interval is usually a bit longer—somewhere between 60,000 and 100,000 miles. But even if you fall within these ranges, there are other factors that can affect how often you need to change your fluid, including the way you drive and the conditions in which you drive.

For example, if you do a lot of stop-and-go driving in hot weather, you may need to change your fluid more often than someone who drives mostly on highways in cooler conditions. And if you tow a trailer or carry heavy loads on a regular basis, you'll also need to change your fluid more frequently.

The bottom line is that it's important to check your owner's manual for specific recommendations. And if you're still not sure how often to change your transmission fluid, talk to a qualified mechanic—they should be able to give you specific advice based on your vehicle and driving habits. Give us a call and let us take care of you.

Happy Adventures,

Heather
