What should I check before a road trip?

I love road tripping. It so great to get out and explore. Seeing new things and exploring new places is so exciting. Oregon is a beautiful state with so many places to go see and visit. You name it and we probably have it. I still have a few places on my list that I have not visited yet and I was born here. My list includes the tree houses in southern Oregon and Wallowa Lake near Joseph. Before embarking on any trip no matter if it is just a day trip to the beach or true adventure you should make sure you have all the items on your list checked off. It is best to have this list gone through the week or so before you trip to make sure you are ready.

  1. Check your tires. You need to check for a bulge, tire wear or other damage.
  2. Tire pressure. Nothing ruins a good start than a flat tire or needing a new tire.
  3. Check your oil. If you are almost due for an oil change you might as well get it done so it is one less thing to worry about.
  4. Coolant – your coolant level needs to be checked and you should have it checked to make sure it is protecting your engine properly.
  5. Lights – all your lights should be checked.
  6. Wipers and washer fluid – how are they? You may not be going during the rainy season, but you made need them to wipe off the bugs
  7. Brakes – a brake check is fast and simple, and it will keep you safe.
  8. General health of your car – it does not hurt it to have a checkup before heading out if it has been a while.

Are you towing? Then we have a checklist for you too. On your trailer or motor home you will need to check the following things.

  1.  Tires – same as your vehicle. Make sure they are in good condition. Many people do not go that much and just assume because of the lack of use they are okay. Tires will start to rot over time and will need to be replaced.
  2. Brakes – if your trailer has brakes then they need to be checked just like your vehicle.
  3. Wheel bearings – trailers typically do not get the wheel bearings checked as often as they should. This is important. If you are driving and your wheel bearing goes out, you have no idea because you will not be able to hear it until it has done some damage.
  4. The charging system. The charger that connects your trailer or motorhome to the power outlet should be checked before and after each use. If this connector starts to short out can cause a fire. I know firsthand how devastating this is and trust me please check it.

I am sure I am missing things on the list and if I do then I apologize now. I will keep updating my list as I go. Give us a call and let us take care of you.

Happy Adventures,

Heather
