What are some common brake issues?

Your vehicle’s brakes are one of its most critical safety systems. Properly functioning brakes allow you to control your vehicle’s speed, avoid collisions, and navigate safely through traffic. Recognizing and addressing brake issues promptly can make all the difference in keeping you and your passengers safe on the road.

Before diving into common brake problems, it’s helpful to understand the basics of how your vehicle’s braking system works. The braking system primarily consists of:

Brake Pads and Shoes: These are the components that press against the rotors or drums to create friction and slow down your vehicle.
Rotors and/or Drums: These are the surfaces that the brake pads and shoes press against to create the necessary friction.
Brake Calipers: These are the components that hold the brake pads and press them against the rotors.
Brake Fluid: This hydraulic fluid transfers the force from your foot on the brake pedal to the brake components, allowing them to engage and slow down your vehicle.

Over time, the components of your braking system can wear out or become damaged. Here are some of the most common brake issues drivers face:

Worn Brake Pads: Brake pads are designed to wear down gradually as they create friction against the rotors. However, if they become too thin, they can no longer effectively stop your vehicle, leading to longer stopping distances and potential damage to the rotors.

Warped Rotors: Rotors can warp due to excessive heat or from uneven wear. Warped rotors can cause vibrations when braking and reduce the effectiveness of your brakes.

Leaking Brake Fluid: Brake fluid is essential for transmitting the force from your brake pedal to the brakes themselves. If you have a brake fluid leak, it can lead to a soft or spongy brake pedal and significantly reduced braking power.

Sticking Brake Calipers: If a brake caliper sticks, it can cause the brake pad to stay engaged with the rotor, even when you’re not pressing the brake pedal. This can lead to uneven brake wear and pulling to one side when braking.

Brake Fade: Brake fade occurs when your brakes overheat, often after repeated hard braking. Overheated brakes lose their ability to generate friction, leading to a noticeable decrease in stopping power.

Being aware of the signs of brake issues can help you catch problems early and address them before they become serious. Here’s what to look out for:

Squeaking or Squealing Noises: High-pitched squeaking noises when braking often indicate that your brake pads are worn and need to be replaced. Some brake pads have wear indicators that create a squeal when the pads are thin.

Grinding Sounds: A grinding noise usually means that your brake pads are completely worn down, and the metal backing is now contacting the rotors. This can cause significant damage to the rotors and should be addressed immediately.

Vibrations When Braking: If you feel vibrations or pulsing through the brake pedal when you brake, it could indicate warped rotors. Warped rotors can decrease braking performance and should be resurfaced or replaced.

Soft or Spongy Brake Pedal: If your brake pedal feels soft or spongy when you press it, there could be air in the brake lines or a leak in the brake fluid. This is a serious issue that requires immediate attention.

Longer Stopping Distances: If your vehicle takes longer to stop than it used to, it could be a sign that your brake pads are worn, your brake fluid is low, or another component of your braking system is failing.

Pulling to One Side: If your vehicle pulls to one side when you brake, it could indicate a problem with a brake caliper, uneven brake pad wear, or an issue with your vehicle’s alignment.

If you notice any of the above signs, it’s important to take action right away. Here’s what you can do: schedule a free brake inspections - we do free brake inspections on most makes and models. Give us a call and let us take care of you.
