Why you need to have your battery tested

That sinking feeling when you turn the key you get that slow, agonizing crank. We've all been there. A dead car battery is a common automotive woe, and knowing when yours is on its way out can save you from inconvenient breakdowns.

A slow engine crank is often the first and most noticeable sign. If your engine cranks slower than usual, especially on cold mornings, it's a strong indication that your battery is losing its ability to hold a charge. The engine might sound sluggish and take longer to start.

A warning light on the dashboard might come on when you have an issue. Your car's dashboard is equipped with warning lights for a reason. If the battery warning light illuminates, it's a clear signal that something's amiss. However, this light can sometimes indicate other issues, like a problem with the alternator, so it's crucial to investigate further.

A weak battery can struggle to power your car's electrical system, including the headlights. If you notice your headlights are dimmer than usual, especially at idle, it could be a sign of a failing battery. Other electrical components, like the radio, power windows, and interior lights, might also behave erratically if the battery is failing. They might dim, flicker, or function intermittently.

Visually inspect your battery terminals. If you see white, blue, or green powdery deposits (corrosion) around the terminals, it can hinder the flow of electricity. Clean the terminals with a wire brush and a mixture of baking soda and water. However, if the corrosion is severe or returns quickly, it might be a symptom of a failing battery.

Car batteries have a limited lifespan, typically between three to five years. If your battery is approaching or exceeding this age, it's more likely to fail, even if you haven't noticed any other symptoms.

If you're unsure whether your battery is failing, you can have it tested.  We do free battery tests and we can check on your electrical system too.
