Fuel pumps are designed to be durable, but they can fail for a variety of reasons.  These are the most common reasons that we see a fuel pump fail.

1. Contaminated Fuel:

  • Dirt, debris, and rust: These contaminants can enter the fuel tank over time and clog the fuel filter and strainer, putting extra strain on the fuel pump. They can also cause abrasive wear on the pump's internal components.
  • Water: Water in the fuel tank can cause corrosion and rust, damaging the pump and other fuel system components.
  • Ethanol: While most modern cars are designed to handle fuel with some ethanol content, higher concentrations or prolonged exposure can degrade rubber and plastic components in older fuel pumps.

2. Running on Low Fuel:

  • Overheating: The fuel in the tank helps to cool the fuel pump. Consistently running on low fuel can cause the pump to overheat, leading to premature wear and failure.
  • We recommend that you fill up your tank when it gets to 1/4 tank or more. I am one of those who fills up the tank at 1/2. I never know when a road trip needs to happen and I want to be prepared.

3. Electrical Issues:

  • Faulty wiring: Corroded or loose wiring can disrupt the power supply to the fuel pump, causing it to malfunction or stop working altogether.
  • Blown fuses or relays: A blown fuse or a faulty relay in the fuel pump circuit can cut off power to the pump.

4. Wear and Tear:

  • Normal wear: Like any mechanical component, fuel pumps have a lifespan. Over time, the internal components can wear out, leading to decreased performance and eventual failure.

5. Other Factors:

  • Incorrect installation: Improper installation of a new fuel pump can cause it to fail prematurely.
  • Fuel line restrictions: Blockages in the fuel lines can put extra strain on the fuel pump.

Here are some signs that your fuel pump might be failing:

  • Difficulty starting the car
  • Engine sputtering or stalling
  • Loss of power during acceleration
  • Whining noise from the fuel tank
  • Decreased fuel efficiency
